Gung Bawa has been a mountain guide since 1996. This enterprising young Balinese man was born in Selat, a small village located in the foothills of Mt Agung, just ten kilometres (30 minutes’ drive) from Pura Pasar Agung – a market temple that serves as one of the two trekking start points. Gung has completed an astonishing total of well-over-600 treks up Mt Agung in his first ten years as a guide. He has an intimate knowledge of the mountain tracks and the safest routes, together with the history of the volcano, and the traditions of the villagers who live within its proximity.
Gung Bawa speaks fluent English, and is an entertaining and inspirational trekking companion. You will find his office in the centre of Selat village, next door to the police station.
